Welcome to the 31st edition of The Brutal Truth. Subscribers are growing bi-weekly, and this week, I am covering mastering consistency, as that is the key to success. I will also explain why being a martyr in this modern day and age is a recipe for failure, yet recruitment is full of them.
In recruitment, there is a saying, “You are only as good as your last placement”. Elite recruiters know that success hinges on a forward-thinking approach: “You are only as good as your next placement.” This mindset sets them apart in a hard market.
When job numbers decline, and competition intensifies, the pressure to perform escalates. Yet, Elite recruiters thrive regardless of the market. Their secret? A relentless focus on their next placements rather than on their last.
Consistency: The Hallmark of Elite Recruiters
Making a successful placement is one thing; sustaining success requires consistency. Elite recruiters excel at this, from mastering the basics and continually adapting to market changes.
Mastering the Basics
At the core of consistent performance is a commitment to recruitment basics:
Adapting to Market Conditions
Recruitment evolves with economic shifts, technological advancements, and changing workforce dynamics. Elite recruiters excel by remaining agile and adapting their strategies:
Looking Forward: The Next Placement
Elite recruiters know their reputation is built on success. This mindset drives them to maintain high standards and deliver consistent results. Focusing on the next placement ensures a continuous cycle of success, even in a hard market, preventing complacency.
In a market where many fail, Elite recruiters thrive. They distinguish themselves by mastering the basics and adapting to market conditions. Their success is defined by their unwavering commitment to the next placement.
The life of a recruiter is portrayed on social media with broad strokes of success stories and career triumphs. Yet, beneath the glossy veneer, a troubling narrative is emerging. Many recruiters today are in a seemingly perpetual state of frustration, struggling to navigate a market fraught with challenges. Their client base has stopped recruiting; candidates are dropping out at critical moments; the counteroffer culture and both parties are engaging in the increasingly common practice of ghosting, and the list of moaning goes on and on. Instead of introspection and actionable change, these recruiters love to play the martyr; they are the victim and not to blame. Meanwhile, elite recruiters who face the same obstacles adopt a mindset of resilience and adaptability, learning from their setbacks and moving forward.
The typical response among struggling recruiters is to externalise their difficulties. Market conditions are too volatile, clients are unreasonable, candidates are fickle, and even trivial factors like the CRM or phone system, the commission structure, and the day ending in Y are cited as reasons for their misfortune. This mindset is not only unproductive but also self-perpetuating. By focusing on external factors, these recruiters fail to recognise and address the internal changes needed to improve their performance.
The tendency to blame external factors creates a vicious cycle. When recruiters see themselves as victims of circumstance, they become passive. This passivity leads to missed opportunities for growth and innovation. Instead of devising new strategies to engage clients and candidates, they remain stuck in a “why me” loop.
Conversely, elite recruiters approach their profession with a fundamentally different mindset. They acknowledge that while external factors play a role, their success is ultimately determined by their actions but mostly by their attitudes. When faced with obstacles, they do not dwell on what they cannot control. Instead, they focus on what they can change.
Elite recruiters embrace the following principles:
For recruiters caught in the martyrdom trap, self-awareness is the first step towards change. Recognising the tendency to blame external factors is crucial. Once acknowledged, recruiters can take massive action to correct their course.
The journey from martyrdom to mastery in recruitment is not easy, but it is achievable. By shifting the focus from external blame to internal growth, recruiters can transform their careers. The difference between those who succeed and those who struggle comes down to mindset and action. Elite recruiters do not moan; they learn, adapt, and move on. The choice to join their ranks is available to any recruiter willing to take a hard look in the mirror and commit to massive action.
